What Is NotebookLM?
NotebookLM is Google's AI notebook tool that grounds every response in your uploaded sources. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude (which may hallucinate facts from training data), NotebookLM only answers from the documents you've added โ and cites the specific source for every claim. This grounding makes it exceptionally reliable for research, legal review, and any task where factual accuracy to source material matters.
The tool accepts PDFs, Google Docs, Google Slides, YouTube videos (via URL), audio files, and web pages. A single 'notebook' can hold 50 sources with up to 500,000 words each โ enough for a large literature review, a full legal case file, or an entire software documentation set. The Audio Overview feature generates a podcast-style discussion of your sources, useful for quickly grasping large amounts of material.
NotebookLM is completely free with a Google account โ no paid tier exists. This makes it the most accessible advanced research AI on the market, though it lacks API access and isn't suitable for automated workflows.
